Genèse: Porter successfully had transformed Barry's The Philadelphia Story into the musical film High Society, so Shevelove pored through the composer's catalogue in search of tunes that would fit Holiday's plot. When the show previewed at the Stratford Festival in Canada, the score consisted of lesser-known Porter songs, and Shevelove decided to eliminate most of them in favor of music more familiar to audiences. He also opted to replace much of Barry's original repartee with songs that suited neither the characters nor the situations, and replaced the gaps with a narrator whose purpose was to explain what was missing from the plot, a device that ultimately proved to be clumsy and confusing.
Résumé: The Narrator introduces the Seton family, who in December 1933 live in a five story townhouse on Fifth Avenue in New York City. He relates their story. Successful Wall Street lawyer Johnny Case has become engaged to Julia Seton. Julia and her sister Linda celebrate the engagement ("At Long Last Love"). However, Johnny has decided to abandon his well-paid career and instead live a life of pleasure, using Julia's money. Julia's banker father Edward is very upset and her willful sister Linda is fascinated. Johnny begins to realize that he loves the unconventional Linda, and they become a couple, disregarding the "old money and values" of others for a life together.

Le très beau revival de No, No, Nanette de Vincent Youmans de 1925 fut peut-être la plus grande surprise de la saison 1970-71 à Broadway. C'était juste un cadeau avec un musical à l'ancienne, n'ayant rien d'autre à l’esprit que de raconter des histoires légères, un éventail de très belles chansons, une panoplie de routines de danse, une production somptueuse avec moulte décors et costumes colorés.
Au beau milieu de toutes ces festivités, apparaissait la star de cinéma des années 1930, Ruby Keeler, jouant Sue Smith, une matrone qui n’a pas hésité à rejoindre les amis de Nanette pour un petit pas de danse. Dans les années '70, les musicals ont connu peu de moments aussi palpitants que I Want to Be Happy: après que deux des premiers rôles eurent terminé leur numéro, les chorus boys intervenaient et chantaient doucement la chanson en l’accompagnant de ukulélés à plumes. Ruby Keeler apparaissait soudain au sommet d’un escalier, attirée par la musique. Et dès qu’elle et le chœur dansant commençaient leur numéro, le 46th Street Theatre s'enflammait. Quel rêve de voir cette actrice légendaire de Broadway, elle cette petite fille maladroite devenue la star de 42nd Street, revenir enfin en star sur les planche des Broadway. Elle était bien là, avec toute la facilité et l’aplomb d’une grande artiste, comme si elle n’avait jamais été loin de Broadway qu'elle n'avait plus fréquenté depuis 42 ans!!!

La série londonienne a tenu à l'époque 665 représentations – deux fois la série new-yorkaise (lorsque la série a finalement atteint Broadway six mois après la première londonienne). Le premier revival londonien eut lieu à l’Hippodrome Theatre en 1936 avec Barbara Vernon et Shaun Glenville.
La production de Londres 1973 était une version révisée qui avait initialement ouvert sur Broadway avec Ruby Keeler. Cette fois-ci, la position est inversée: le show de New York totalise 861 représentations, mais celui de Londres n’en compte que 277.

With Bruce Forsyth ad-libbing throughout in his accepted breezy manner, this was a variety show cum revue rather than any kind of structured musical.
